The European Single Market is the largest in the world, but fully capitalising on its potential remains an ongoing project. The current geopolitical context is complex; however, as the EU Presidency transitions from Sweden to Spain, and ahead of the EU elections next year, ensuring this project endures is vital, particularly for SMEs. To this end, policymakers convened alongside Swedish and Spanish SMEs, who shared their experiences and ambitions for progress on the Single Market, particularly through the lenses of digitalisation and sustainability. What was most effective under Sweden’s EU Presidency and how can Spain continue this work around delivering a green and innovative Single Market in 2023 and beyond?

In Conversation: Doing Business as an SME in 2023

SMEs dominate both the Swedish and Spanish economies, and across
Europe, they are the economic backbone, representing 99% of all businesses
in the EU. SMEs employ circa 100 million people, account for more than half
of Europe’s GDP and are essential value creators across all sectors.

We will hear from a selection of Spanish and Swedish SMEs and listen to
their journey and stories. How has the ability to trade across borders and
online enabled them to grow? What are their current challenges and
opportunities? How are SMEs overcoming obstacles to tackling sustainability
in a competitive way and what policies can facilitate this?
